Ginseng is popular with athletes because it helps the body increase its resistance to physical and emotional stress and fatigue. Ginseng is generally stimulating and can increase alertness and concentration as well as stamina and strength. There are several different types og ginseng: Korean (Panax ginseng), American (Panax quinquefolius) and Siberian (Eleutherococcus senticosus).
Siberian ginseng is said to be the most therapeutic.
Ginseng works best if taken for short periods. Six weeks of taking the supplements followed by a two-month break and then a period of thaking them for another six weeks is one way. For more sustained effect, two weeks on and two weeks off may be preferred.
Do not take giseng near to bedtime as it can cause insomnia. Do not use it if you have high blood pressure, during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.
Studies of Siberian ginseng show that it is an adaptogen, which means that it supports the body under stress. It can promote healthy function of adrenal gland and improve the use of oxygen in exercising the muscles. Endurance and mental acuity have been shown to be enhanced in Russian studies, from where claims also come that Siberian ginseng supports the immune system and the liver.
